Artist Statement

My ceramic practice is inspired by an arts career that began with professional ballet. This body of work conceptualises my experience of physical performance and comes from the ballerina within me. Through clay I explore the fundamental aspects of dance, such as movement in space, physical strength, metaphor, light, shadow, and ephemerality. The result is a multimedia kinetic installation using ceramics, lighting, sound and a variety of other materials including ribbon and steel.

The physicality of the clay, the technical discipline of ceramic production and the multiplicity of potential outcomes are all enlivening explorations that recall the expressive creativity of ballet. As I push the boundaries of creativity, learning to ‘dance with clay’ has become a joyful artistic experimentation and a discovery of new ways to perform.
